Caring for English Bulldogs

Training and Exercise

Training and Exercise

When training your English Bulldog, special attention should be paid to the breed’s quirks. Exposing them to lots of sights, sounds, and faces while they’re young is good for any breed. English Bulldogs love to chew, so taking the time to teach them to “let go” of what they have in their mouth will help in the long run. They may also get possessive of their food, so they should be trained to graciously tolerate people and other pets near their food bowl while they’re eating.

English Bulldogs are as happy to sit at their owners’ feet as they are to take the occasional walk. They enjoy moderate activities, but overheating is a concern, so care should be taken when training and exercising. English Bulldogs also enjoy wading in shallow water, but they are not swimmers and should be monitored around pools and ponds.

Health

English Bulldogs are prone to overheating, so exercise should be limited, especially on warm days. When they are overheated, their tongue hangs further than usual and may change shades. If this is the case, ice cubes or a cold bath may help. Check with your vet if you have concerns about your dog’s weight.

Grooming

Grooming

Brushing their coat a few times a week keeps your French Bulldog’s fur sleek and shiny. With wrinkles like these, check to make sure they are kept clean and dry. A hydrogen peroxide-soaked cotton ball works well for keeping the skin beneath wrinkles clean. Like all breeds, their ears should be kept clean and dry as well as their nails trimmed regularly.
